Extensive renovations have turned Svendborg's oldest hotel into an acceptable choice once again for overnighting. Even if you don't stay here, consider it for a dinner, as it serves what is arguably the most authentic Danish cuisine in town, including those ping-pong-size meatballs, known as frikadeller, a large platter containing plaice with hollandaise, and many meat dishes, as well as several smørrebrød selections. All the bedrooms are decorated in the romantic English style, evocative of the 19th century. In addition to the cozy restaurant and hotel, there is a pub, Hvalfisken, where you can order beer from many countries, especially Ireland, Britain, and Belgium, while listening to live music. Sailors and guests mingle freely. The location is at the harbor where the ferry pulls in.
