Frommer's Review
Sydney's Spanish quarter, around Liverpool Street (a 10-min. walk from Town Hall station on your right just past Sydney's main cinema strip), offers some good restaurants, of which Capitan Torres is my favorite. It's not fine dining, and certainly not up there with the best Mexican and Spanish restaurants found in the Spanish-speaking world, but it's a good choice for something casual. Downstairs is a tapas bar with traditional stools, Spanish staff, and lots of authentic dark oak. Upstairs on two floors is a fabulous restaurant with heavy wooden tables and an atmosphere thick with sangria and regional food. The garlic prawns are good, and the whole snapper a memorable experience. The tapas are better at Asturiana (tel. 02/9264 1010), another Spanish restaurant a couple of doors down. Make sure you insist on eating at the bar for that authentic experience. Warning: Spanish serving staff in Sydney can be a bit gruff, so come armed with your sense of humor.
