You won’t need a car, just your own two feet and perhaps a few bus or cab rides to see the best of Siracusa proper. If you’re traveling by car, ask your hotel before arriving about the best place to park. Ortigia Island is ringed with public lots, including the large Talete complex at the northern end, near the bridge to the mainland. Parking is .60€ to 1€ an hour, payable in machines. These lots use a computerized camera system in which you enter your license number when leaving and pay the appropriate amount. Much of Ortigia, with the exemption of the circumference road and a few main thoroughfares, is off-limits to nonresidents and monitored with cameras, so pay close attention to signs.

Syracuse is served by a network of buses run by AST (tel. 840-000323). Buses leave from the center of Syracuse for Piazza della Posta, which lies across the bridge on Ortygia Island. The best place to catch a bus in Syracuse proper is Piazza Marconi (also called Foro Siracusano). The most frequented routes are nos. 21 to 23, which also stop at the rail depot.

Sometimes it's better to call a taxi (tel. 0931 17977). The fare from the train station to Ortygia is about 10€.
