Trails Within Parque Imposible
Guides are obligatory and will be assigned to you at the visitor center. The three main trails are not too difficult, and it is possible to switch and combine. A $10 tip per group to the guide is customary, as they receive no salary. The easiest trek is to Mirador El Mulo, a lookout point with lovely views of the Río Guayapa Valley. The 1km (.6-mile) trail is sign-posted with displays explaining the local flora and fauna. You pass a river source and the old coffee plantations now replaced by forest. Farther past Mirador Mulo, there is another viewing point called Mirador Madre Cacao. The trail then drops drastically towards a beautiful river pool called Los Enganches, approximately 3.5km (2.2 miles) from the trail start. Back up the hill on the trail that passed Mirador Madre Cacao, the path continues upriver for 1km (.6 mile) until you reach a waterfall and pool. Here, you'll find a carved stone known as Piedra Sellada, adorned with Mayan script that dates from A.D. 1500. The trail to Cerro El León is the most ambitious, with a steep 4km (2.5-mile) hike to the park's tallest mountain at 1,113m (3,562 ft.). The trail leaves from the visitor's center and descends into a jungle gorge before emerging on the other side through a dense forest to the peak, which, needless to say, has some beautiful panoramic views.
