Occupying an open-air building constructed in 1937 beside the black-sand beach in Pirae, the Hotel Le Royal Tahitien's dining room provides both charm and views of the lagoon and Moorea to accompany its very good international fare. Like the hotel, it also offers excellent value for the quality of its food. The cuisine is primarily French, such as fresh mahimahi in meunière sauce, but you will find island influences here, such as very good poisson cru and chicken in a pineapple sauce. Locals flock here for the big lunchtime salads, as well as for live music in the adjacent bar on Friday and Saturday evenings. Be sure to talk baseball with Australian-born Lionel Kennedy, the hotel's general manager.
