A 15-minute walk to downtown and a quick drive to the airport, this state-of-the-art hotel stands on the site of the old Hotel Tahiti, whose massive thatch-roofed public areas hosted many a local soiree. With Tahiti's largest meeting space, the Sheraton still serves as one of the city's prime gathering places. Curving steps under a huge shell chandelier lead down to Quinn's Bar, an overwater dining room, and an expansive courtyard with restaurant and lagoonside swimming pool, which helps compensate for the lack of beach here. A hot tub perched atop a pile of rocks beside the pool offers a terrific view of Moorea. Except for 10 suites, which have one or two bedrooms, the spacious units are virtually identical except for the vistas off their private balconies. "Superior" units directly face Moorea, but you actually pay less for them since they are slightly smaller than the "deluxe lagoon" units facing the open ocean or harbor (someone who's never been to Tahiti must have devised that policy). This is a very good choice for a short layover when you don't need a beach. Top Dive, one of French Polynesia's best operators, has a base here.
