Frommer's Review
Recently given a thorough facelift, this midrise hotel was built in the 1960s to resemble a modern version of a terraced Mayan pyramid. Formerly the Sofitel Maeva Beach Tahiti, it sits beside Maeva Bay and a gray-sand beach of the same name. The murky lagoon off the beach isn't as good for swimming and snorkeling as for anchoring numerous yachts, whose masts slice the beach's view of Moorea. The smallish rooms are equipped with modern European amenities (the bright, lime-green bathrooms nearly blinded me) and open to balconies. Those on the upper floors on the north (or "beach") side have partial views of Moorea, while those on the garden side look south along Tahiti's west coast. The Maeva Beach is often featured in some of the least expensive package tours. While adequate if cost is a major consideration, don't expect the same amount of space, luxuries, or amenities as at the Inter-Continental Resort Tahiti or Le Meridien.
