Frommer's Review
One of the top values in French Polynesia, this American-owned hotel is the only moderately priced place on the island with its own beach, a stretch of deep black sand from which its suburban neighbors fish and swim. And long-time Australian-born manager Lionel Kennedy (a die-hard baseball fan) and his English-speaking staff are Tahiti's best when it comes to friendly, personalized service. Sitting in an expansive lawn and lush garden traversed by a small stream, the swimming pool sports a Jacuzzi and a waterfall cascading over rocks. The spacious guest rooms are in contemporary two-story wood-and-stone buildings that look like an American condominium complex. Colorful bedspreads and seat cushions add an island ambience to the rooms, however, and the tropics definitely pervade Le Royal Tahitien Restaurant, a fine, moderately priced establishment with a 1937 vintage thatch ceiling. Both the beachside restaurant and adjacent bar are popular with local businesspeople. A local band plays on Friday and Saturday evenings. Your fellow guests are likely to be businesspersons living on the other islands and travelers who have made their own arrangements (that is, few groups stay here). It's very popular, so reserve as soon as possible. As with the Radisson Plaza , you will need to rent a car or take a taxi if going downtown after dark, since the last local bus passes here about 5pm.
