Introduction to Talloires

551km (342 miles) SE of Paris; 32km (20 miles) N of Albertville; 13km (8 miles) S of Annecy

The charming village of Talloires, which dates to 866, is old enough to appear on lists of territories once controlled by Lothar II, great-grandson of Charlemagne. Chalk cliffs surround a bay, and at the lower end a promontory encloses a port. An 18-hole golf course, Golf Club du Lac d'Annecy (tel. 04-50-60-12-89; www.golf-lacannecy.com), and watersports such as boating, swimming, water-skiing, and fishing make this a favorite vacation spot. Talloires also boasts one of France's great restaurants, Auberge du Père-Bise, and a Benedictine abbey founded in the 11th century, now the deluxe Hôtel de l'Abbaye.
