El Minzah Hotel ReviewBuilt in 1930 by a British aristocrat heavily mired in the shady business of the InterZone, this grand old dame has entertained kings and queens, presidents and prime ministers, a string of red-carpet Hollywood stars, and a few dodgy spies. Today, stranded like a colonial island between her Moroccan-ized former cohorts the Grand Socco and place de France, the El Minzah is still worthy of at least three of her five stars. Carpeted corridors lead to large rooms, some with frescoed doors, archways of intricately carved stucco, and carved-wood armoires; others in a more rustic Moroccan style have earthy colors and Berber carpets. Most rooms have a view looking over the lush gardens to the Bay of Tangier and beyond into the Straits of Gibraltar; the suites also have a sitting room. Along with that view, it's the amenities that make this place something special. A large Andalusian courtyard leads off in all directions -- a wine bar offering light meals; Moroccan and international restaurants; a wellness center and spa; and Maclean's Bar that leads through to the large pool. The pool is set in a spacious, peaceful garden of green lawns; palm, citrus, and umbrella trees; roses; hibiscus; and lilies. During summer, guests can enjoy a lovely buffet lunch while lounging in the sun. The large staff of uniformed garçons is presided over by 30-year veteran Monsieur Ahmed ben Nasar. To stay at the El Minzah is to overlook the gruff reception staff, sometimes wheezing air-conditioning, and the odd bit of flaking paint and soak up the atmosphere of a true colonial relic that still has the best view in town. Tip: Booking through a travel agency often includes demi-pension (half board), but sometimes there is miscommunication between agencies and the hotel. Be fully aware when checking in as to what the hotel is including in your room rate. Facilities: Note: This information was accurate when it was published, but can change without notice. Please be sure to confirm all rates and details directly with the companies in question before planning your trip.

| 2 stars | Frommer's Very Highly Recommended | |
| 3 stars | Frommer's Exceptional |
Frommer's ranks every hotel, restaurant, attraction, shop, and nightlife establishment it reviews for quality, value, service, amenities, and special features using a star-rating scale, an expression of the strong compare-and-contrast opinions that are a brand hallmark.
Other ratings provide stars based primarily on price and amenities; the Frommer's star rating is meant to quantify the kind of intangible, experiential elements that help travelers make informed decisions.
The "baseline" recommendation is zero stars--every hotel, restaurant, attraction, shop, and nightlife establishment that Frommer's chooses to review is recommended; otherwise, we simply wouldn't include it.
