Rif & Spa Tanger ReviewThe old Rif has had a makeover and is back to its worthy position as one of the best hotels on the beach strip. While it once welcomed the likes of Sir Winston Churchill and Elizabeth Taylor, it now panders to the tour group brigade and is also a good choice for independent travelers. Those looking for large, modern rooms in a prime location (away from the noise and grime of the city center or medina) will appreciate the Rif. A dusty blue-and-red color combination throughout the hotel works well, especially with the carpeted floors, lending a hint of luxury. In the rooms, marble floors with Berber carpets mix well with the accent wall and reproduced prints of 18th-century Tangier. A small recess with comfortable lounge chairs is well positioned under the window, and the mosaic and marble bathrooms have a welcoming step-in shower. There's a choice of higher-end rooms and suites as well. The Rif's amenities are numerous. The first floor lends access to a choice of restaurants (Moroccan and international), bars, and a reasonable-size pool with a waterfall. The central hallway on this floor is a piece of art in itself, with original floorboards, carved-cedar wood ceiling, chandeliers, and original artworks depicting Atlas and Rif scenes. The Rif has always been a big hotel but is currently handling the new attention well, with enough staff to offer a good level of friendly service. Tip: Some travelers have advised me of experiencing problems with reservations made through booking agencies. The worst case has been a refusal by management to honor a prepaid online booking. If possible, correspond with the hotel directly. Facilities: Note: This information was accurate when it was published, but can change without notice. Please be sure to confirm all rates and details directly with the companies in question before planning your trip.

| 3 stars | Frommer's Exceptional |
Frommer's ranks every hotel, restaurant, attraction, shop, and nightlife establishment it reviews for quality, value, service, amenities, and special features using a star-rating scale, an expression of the strong compare-and-contrast opinions that are a brand hallmark.
Other ratings provide stars based primarily on price and amenities; the Frommer's star rating is meant to quantify the kind of intangible, experiential elements that help travelers make informed decisions.
The "baseline" recommendation is zero stars--every hotel, restaurant, attraction, shop, and nightlife establishment that Frommer's chooses to review is recommended; otherwise, we simply wouldn't include it.
