Hotel Marco Polo

This old mainstay of the Tangier hotel scene underwent a full renovation in 2006 and now offers exceptionally good-value modern rooms in a prime location. Although the hotel sits on a very busy corner, the rooms are set quite a distance back from the road, some reached by a fair hike up a few sets of stairs. Pastel tones have been used throughout, and I'm very impressed with the restraint in garish furnishings that usually accompanies a hotel refurbishment in Morocco. Built-in cupboards and bathrooms with ventilator fans are also welcome touches. The rooms on the first floor are a bit larger than those on the ground floor and come with a small lounge and coffee table. Besides the well-known bar and shaded outdoor patio-restaurant, there's also a small hammam that can be heated up with a couple of hours' notice.
