Getting To Taveuni & Getting Around -- Both Air Fiji and Sun Air fly to Taveuni from Nadi, and Air Fiji has nonstop service from Nausori Airport near Suva. The hotels send buses or hire taxis to pick up their guests.
The ferries land at Waiyevo. A small ferry runs across the Somosomo Strait between Waiyevo and Buca Bay on Vanua Levu. It departs from the New Wharf at 8am daily. A bus connects Savusavu to the ferry wharf at Buca Bay.
Taxis don't regularly ply the roads. The only taxi stand is outside Lesuma Supermarket in Waiyevo. Your hotel staff can hail one within a few minutes, or you can phone Nan's Taxi (tel. 888 0705) or Ishwar's Taxi (tel. 888 0424). Negotiate for a round-trip price if you're going out into the villages and having the driver wait for you. None of the taxis have meters, but the fare from the airstrip should be F$2 (US90¢) to Maravu Plantation and Taveuni Island resorts and F$20 (US$12) to Navakoca (Qamea) Landing, Waiyevo, or Bouma Falls. Taxis will take you anywhere for about F$30 (US$18) an hour.
Local buses fan out from Waiyevo to the outlying villages about three times a day from Monday to Saturday. For example, a bus leaves Waiyevo for Bouma at 8:30am, 12:15pm, and 4:30pm. The one-way fare to Bouma is no more than F$4 (US$2.50). Contact Pacific Transport (tel. 888 0278) opposite Kaba's Supermarket in Nagara.
Don't Rent a Car -- Taveuni's only road, which runs along the west and north coasts, is paved between Waiyevo and the airstrip. Elsewhere it's rough, winding, narrow, and at places carved into sheer cliffs above the sea. Also, many local drivers -- including bus drivers -- roar along at top speed. There can be very little room to get off the road to avoid them. Therefore, you should forget renting a vehicle here; hire a taxi and driver.
