Hotels

With the exception of Garden Island Resort at Waiyevo, Taveuni's good accommodations are near the airstrip on the island's northeastern corner. A few small planes arrive and depart about 9:30am and again about 2:30pm, so it's not like you're staying under the flight path of an international airport. You can walk among the airstrip-area hotels and restaurants in no more than 20 minutes.

Hostels -- Don't forget the dormitory at the Garden Island Resort.

Cottage Rentals -- Several expatriates who live here rent out their own homes when they're not here, or they have cottages on their properties to let. The most luxurious is Paul and Ashley Jolly's Taveuni Palms, Postal Agency Matei (tel. 888 0032; www.taveunipalms.com), a two-bedroom, two-bath house with a large deck beside its own private beach. They also have a smaller guest bure next door, and there's a swimming pool on their 2 1/2 acres of coconut palms and forest. The Jollys charge US$700 double, including chef-prepared meals and watersports equipment.

American Audrey Brown, Postal Agency Matei (tel. 888 0039), has a cottage known as Audrey's By the Sea next to her own home on 14 acres of tropical gardens across the road from the lagoon. It has a kitchenette, a separate bedroom, and a bathroom with hot-water shower. Audrey charges about F$120 (US$72) a night.

Camping -- Campers who like to sleep by the sea can find a beautiful (if not insect-free) site at Beverly Campground (tel. 888 0381), on Beverly Beach about 1.5km (1 mile) south of the airstrip (Island Pizza Kitchen is on the premises, and Maravu Plantation & Beach Resort's beach is next door). Large trees completely shade the sites and hang over portions of the lagoon-lapped shore. The ground has flushing toilets, cold-water showers, and a rudimentary beachside kitchen. The campground rents kayaks. Rates are about F$15 (US$9) per person. Bring your own tent.

Resorts Offshore from Taveuni -- The northern end of Taveuni gives way to a chain of small, rugged islands that are as beautiful as any in Fiji. Their steep, jungle-clad hills drop to rocky shorelines in most places, but here and there little shelves of land and narrow valleys are bordered by beautiful beaches. The sheltered waters between the islands cover colorful reefs, making the area a hotbed for scuba diving and snorkeling. Except for a few Fijian villages and the two resorts described below, these little gems are undeveloped and unspoiled.
