Frommer's Review
Although it has its own lovely beach across the road (a 5-min. downhill walk), this unusual retreat is set among the palms of a working copra plantation (with some cocoa, coffee, and vanilla thrown in for diversification). Only two of the guest bungalows have ocean views, and those are through the palm trees. The bures are laid out among grounds that are carefully planted with bananas, papayas, and a plethora of ginger plants and wild orchids brought down from the mountains. This plantation setting means the property can get warm and humid during the day. The guest bungalows have ceiling fans and front porches but not air conditioners. Built like old-fashioned planters' houses rather than as Fijian bures, they have thatch-covered tin roofs and reed or mat accents that lend a tropical ambience. The best units are four new honeymoon bures with four-person-size Jacuzzi tubs under their outdoor showers. Four other units have been turned into honeymoon suites, with two rooms, outdoor showers, Jacuzzis, and sun decks surrounded by rock privacy walls. Only the older, standard bungalows don't have outdoor showers. With an emphasis on very good "nouvelle Fijian" cuisine, the dining room is under the high thatch roof and looks out to the lawns and a pool that's surrounded by an expansive deck. Wine lovers are in for a treat here, for owner Jochen Kiess, a former German lawyer, has accumulated one of the finest lists in Fiji.
