Frommer's Review
It's unfortunate that geography places this resort next to last in my coverage of Fiji, for Matangi is one of the best values in the South Pacific. Another reason is owners Noel and Flo Douglas. Of English-Fijian descent, Flo's family owns all of hilly, 260-acre Matagi Island, a horseshoe-shaped remnant of a volcanic cone, where in 1987 they built their resort in a beachside coconut grove on the western shore. A new main building whose deck hangs out over the lagoon takes full advantage of gorgeous sunset views of Qamea and Taveuni. At first the Douglases catered to low-budget Australian divers, but as their business grew, their clientele shifted to a mix of diving and nondiving Americans, Australians, and Europeans. Although children are welcome, this is now primarily an adult-oriented resort, as witnessed by a new spa. Honeymooners can escape to three romantic bures 20 feet up in the air, one of them actually in a shady Pacific almond tree. These units all have outdoor showers, as do some of the deluxe units down in the coconut grove beside the beach. You can also be taken to the spectacular half-moon beach in aptly named Horseshoe Bay and be left alone for a secluded picnic. Other nondiving activities include hiking, kayaking, bird-watching, sailing, windsurfing, and sportfishing. Except for the honeymoon bures, Matangi's bungalows are round, in the Polynesian-influenced style of eastern Fiji. Umbrella-like spokes radiating from hand-hewn central poles support reed-lined conical roofs. Reed dividers separate sitting areas with single-bed settees from sleeping areas to the rear of the units. One bure is equipped for disabled guests.
