Frommer's Review
This is another property I regret having to list last, for it has some of the most stunning bures and main building of any resort in Fiji, and the value for dollar here is excellent. In the proverbial lagoonside coconut grove, this entire property shows remarkable attention to American-style comfort and Fijian detail. It has become even better under new owners Ron Eckstrom and Bryce Earwaker, who have installed a spa and added air-conditioning and outdoor showers to what were already the most charming of all Fijian bures. If I were to build a set for a South Seas movie, it would feature these bungalows covered by a foot-thick Fijian thatch. Spacious and rectangular, each has an old-fashioned screen door that leads out to a porch that's complete with a hammock strung between two posts. Each bure is partially reed lined and large enough to swallow the king-size bed, two oversize sitting chairs, a coffee table, and several other pieces of island-style furniture, some of it exquisitely handcrafted by the staff. Once small, their bathrooms have been enlarged to include outdoor showers. If you need more space, you can rent the split-level honeymoon bure, which is twice the size of the regular units, with a living room, separate bedroom, and a huge bathroom with outdoor shower.
Qamea's centerpiece is a soaring, 16m (52-ft.) high priest's bure supported by two huge tree trunks. Rope made of coconut fiber and some well-disguised nuts and bolts hold the poles and sweeping thatch roof together. Orange light from kerosene lanterns hung high under the roof lends incredibly romantic charm at twilight. That's when you wash your bare feet in giant clamshells and sit on the surrounding veranda to sip cocktails and recap your days of scuba diving, snorkeling, visiting Fijian villages, trekking to Bouma Falls on Taveuni, or doing absolutely nothing except sleep in your own hammock. Gourmet-quality meals are served in the big central bure, as is silver-service afternoon tea. Three tables are set aside for honeymooners to dine in relative privacy. There is no children's menu because no kids under 13 are accepted here.
