Vatuwiri Farm Resort ReviewOn a flat plateau at Vuna Point, this is not a resort but a farm stay, where you reside in one of two simple seaside bungalows while sharing a 720-hectare (1,800-acre) copra plantation, ranch, and farm with the Tarte family, whose ancestor, Englishman James Valentine Tarte, bought the land in 1871. He intended to raise cotton, but a precipitous drop in prices after the American Civil War halted that notion. Today the fifth generation of Tartes produces some 300 British tonnes (about 661,386 lb.) of copra a year and graze several hundred head of cattle beneath the coconut palms. You will share meals with the Tartes in their home overlooking the sea. Their bungalows sit on a rocky promontory, but the property has a long black-sand beach. You can go horseback riding on the beach and in the coconut groves here. Paradise Taveuni and its dive base are about 5 minutes away. | 3 stars | Frommer's Exceptional |
Frommer's ranks every hotel, restaurant, attraction, shop, and nightlife establishment it reviews for quality, value, service, amenities, and special features using a star-rating scale, an expression of the strong compare-and-contrast opinions that are a brand hallmark.
Other ratings provide stars based primarily on price and amenities; the Frommer's star rating is meant to quantify the kind of intangible, experiential elements that help travelers make informed decisions.
The "baseline" recommendation is zero stars--every hotel, restaurant, attraction, shop, and nightlife establishment that Frommer's chooses to review is recommended; otherwise, we simply wouldn't include it.
