Frommer's Review
By day, Shalvata ("asylum" in Hebrew), is a whimsical, laid-back outdoor restaurant where you can unwind with your toes in the cool sand and where kids can make sand castles in between mouthfuls of sweet potato quiche or hot dogs and chips with lots of ketchup. Tables, couches, and lawn chairs are set in the sand overlooking the water, shaded by thatch palapas and umbrellas. At night the restaurant becomes a breezy, easy-going dance bar that makes you think you've been transported to a beach in the Caribbean. A friendly pickup spot for people of all backgrounds and persuasions, Shalvata offers tapas, salads, and desserts that are tasty and can be gracefully eaten while talking to a stranger, as well as a full bar that features a well-chosen list of Israeli wines. The frozen margarita (NIS 32/$7) is a house favorite. The music is always right; different nights feature jazz, Latin/salsa, hip-hop (with DJ); or '60s chill-out music. Shalvata is a fun, affordable place to dance, talk, and eat -- even with someone you already know well.
