Palms, Pines, Ficus & Roman Remains -- In back of the cathedral, Via Belvedere leads up to a panoramic terrace offering one of the grandest seascapes along the Tyrrhenian coast. The sea is set against the backdrop of Monte Calógero. From here, you'll also have a vista of the lower town and the port. Try not to let the industrialization spoil this otherwise idyllic vision for you. A short walk to your left leads to the "always locked" church dedicated to Santa Caterina d'Alessandria in the 14th century. Continue along at this point to the park, Villa Palmieri, laid out in 1845. Here you will see the ruins of an ancient Roman curia. Follow Via Anfiteatro from the park to the ruins of a Roman amphitheater from the 1st century A.D.
