The Kimberley is one area where Aboriginal culture, to a larger extent than elsewhere, has remained intact. Find a gallery that encourages and stocks the work of local artists, such as those of the Warmun (Turkey Creek) school,. An Aboriginal commentary on the Kimberley landscape and/or the Wandjina rock art can add immeasurably to one's understanding. You have a good chance of getting some Aboriginal contact and input when staying at Kooljaman Resort or traveling on an APT Kimberley Wilderness Adventure -- both are part-owned by local Aboriginal communities.

It can be hard for people who live in the Northern Hemisphere -- especially city folk -- to appreciate the glory of the southern skies, with the Milky Way curving majestically through the heavens. In the Kimberley there is no pollution, and no city lights, to diminish the evening show. Find time to go away from your camp or lodge, lie on the ground, and try to take in the immensity of what's up there. You'll probably see a satellite and maybe a shooting star.
