Hiking

At the southern tip of Lake Willoughby, two rounded peaks rise above the lake's waters. These are the biblically named Mount Hor and Mount Pisgah, both of which lie within Willoughby State Forest. The summits are accessible via footpaths that are somewhat strenuous but offer excellent views.

For Mount Pisgah (elevation 2,751 ft.), look for parking on the west side of Route 5A, about 5 3/4 miles south of the junction with Route 16. The trail begins across the road and runs 1.7 miles to the summit. To hike Mount Hor (elevation 2,648 ft.), drive 1 1/2 miles down the gravel road on the right side of the parking lot, veering right at the fork. Park at the small parking lot, and continue on foot past the parking lot a short distance until you spot the start of the trail. Follow the trail signs to the summit, a round-trip of about 3.5 miles.

Mountain Biking

The Craftsbury ridge has several excellent variations for bikers in search of easy terrain. Most of the biking is on hard-packed dirt roads through sparsely populated countryside; views are sensational, and one gets a strong feeling of being way out in the country. The Craftsbury Outdoor Center (tel. 802/586-7767; www.craftsbury.com), at 535 Lost Nation Rd. in Craftsbury Common, rents mountain bikes and is an excellent source for maps and local information about area roads. A small fee is charged for using bikes on the cross-country ski trail network.

Cross-Country Skiing

The same folks who offer mountain biking at the Craftsbury Outdoor Center also maintain about 60 miles of groomed cross-country trails through the gentle hills surrounding Craftsbury. The forgiving, old-fashioned trails, maintained by Craftsbury Nordic Center (tel. 802/586-7767), emphasize pleasing landscapes rather than fast action; they even "guarantee" skiable snow from January until the second Sunday in March. Another option is the Highland Lodge Ski Touring Center (tel. 802/533-2647; www.highlandlodge.com), on Caspian Lake in Greensboro, with more than 30 miles of packed trails (about 10 miles of which are further groomed) through rolling woodlands and fields. Should you care to stay here, there are double rooms and cottages on the property.
