Introduction to The Adirondacks

The Adirondack State Park is a six-million-acre chunk of land in northern New York, larger than Yellowstone and Yosemite combined, and unique in the diversity of its terrain. The scenery--rugged peaks, pastoral countryside, wild backcountry, and quaint lakeside hamlets--is stunning in all corners of the park. Wildlife is plentiful, and attractions, from French and Indian War battle sites to lavish Great Camps built by wealthy industrialists, dot the landscape. The once-impenetrable wilderness is now easily accessible, although the extreme North Country weather can dump an average of 10 feet of snow in one season, closing roads but delighting winter sports enthusiasts. A range of accommodations and activities is available for all tastes and interests: Visitors can relax at a posh resort with full-service spa and 18-hole golf course or bushwhack through tangled forests and sleep beneath the stars.
