Frommer's Review
Note: The lodge closed after experiencing a fire in late 2005, but has re-opened in a limited capacity offering 12 available cabins and a single nightly meal for guests.
Travelers have been escaping to this quintessential Adirondack retreat for over a century. The Lodge is an upscale, exclusive Relais & Châteaux property that sits on the western bank of Lake Placid, isolated from Main Street crowds. The landscaped grounds and rustic-style architecture are extraordinary -- every room houses a stone fireplace and unique furniture crafted by local artisans. The lodge boasts a restaurant famous for its organic cuisine and lofty prices. Though activities are plentiful -- guests may snowshoe or ski here in winter or paddle around Lake Placid in summer -- this resort caters to the quiet, private set, often celebrities and CEOs, and does not encourage small children. If there ever was a storybook backdrop for a romantic getaway, this is it.
