Château d'Urbilhac ReviewIts history is rich and illustrious, and if you ask them, the congenial owners (Sylvie and Claude Aillaud) of this massive stone palace will recite dates, names, and conflicts that date from France's wars of religion during the 16th century. For nearly 30 years, this high-altitude château and its 30 hectares (74 acres) of forest functioned as an upscale hotel with an equally upscale restaurant, but today, things have been scaled back to family-friendly proportions, and meals are available only to residents and their invited guests. One of the high points is the pool, an 80-foot-long (24-meter-long) watery rectangle that overlooks the valley of the River Doux, far below. Bedrooms are high ceilinged, rather formal, and furnished with 19th- and early-20th-century antiques. The Aillaud family also rents two houses, one with one bedroom, the other with four, as part of long-term rentals for families and groups of friends who want to spend a significant block of time within the region. Frommer's ranks every hotel, restaurant, attraction, shop, and nightlife establishment it reviews for quality, value, service, amenities, and special features using a star-rating scale, an expression of the strong compare-and-contrast opinions that are a brand hallmark.
Other ratings provide stars based primarily on price and amenities; the Frommer's star rating is meant to quantify the kind of intangible, experiential elements that help travelers make informed decisions.
The "baseline" recommendation is zero stars--every hotel, restaurant, attraction, shop, and nightlife establishment that Frommer's chooses to review is recommended; otherwise, we simply wouldn't include it.
