Cranwell Resort Review

The main building of this all-season resort looks like a castle in the Scottish Highlands, but no 17th-century laird lived this well. That's where the most expensive rooms are; the rest are in four smaller outlying buildings. Accommodations are outfitted with less concern for adherence to a particular style than for surrounding guests in immediate comfort. The 380-acre property is ringed by views of the surrounding hills, has cross-country ski trails in winter, and boasts a 60-acre golf school. Three dining rooms range from formal to pubby, and live jazz is featured Friday and Saturday nights. An enormous 35,000-square-foot spa was opened in 2002, with pool, lounges with fireplaces, and 17 spa treatment rooms. Services include facial treatments, various massage therapies, exfoliations, and healing wraps. In summer and fall, a satirical cabaret revue is added to the diversions.

Facilities:
4 restaurants (eclectic/grill/spa); bar; heated outdoor and indoor pools; 18-hole par-70 golf course; 4 tennis courts; extensive health club; bike rental; salon; limited room service; in-room massage; babysitting; same-day dry cleaning

About Our System

Frommer's ranks every hotel, restaurant, attraction, shop, and nightlife establishment it reviews for quality, value, service, amenities, and special features using a star-rating scale, an expression of the strong compare-and-contrast opinions that are a brand hallmark.

Other ratings provide stars based primarily on price and amenities; the Frommer's star rating is meant to quantify the kind of intangible, experiential elements that help travelers make informed decisions.

The "baseline" recommendation is zero stars--every hotel, restaurant, attraction, shop, and nightlife establishment that Frommer's chooses to review is recommended; otherwise, we simply wouldn't include it.
