The '62 Center for Theatre and Dance

Williamstown has long hosted one of the Berkshires' premier summer attractions, the Williamstown Theatre Festival (tel. 413/597-3400; www.wtfestival.org), and now it has a facility that provides a proper showcase. This ambitious center opened in the fall of 2005 (the year in its name is for the class that graduated in 1962), providing three performance venues, as well as studios, classrooms, and rehearsal spaces. Dramatic productions, dance, music, and related cultural events, involving students, alumni, and professionals, can now be mounted all year. Staging classic and new plays during its season from late June to late August, the festival attracts many top actors and directors. The MainStage Theatre presents works by major playwrights, while the CenterStage often features more experimental productions. It's not too difficult to get tickets; even if a performance is said to be sold out, there are often cancellations in the 30 minutes before curtain. Tickets to the Festival itself range from about $20 to $55, while admission to other events is often free, and no more than $10.
