CampingAlthough there are no campgrounds within the boundaries of Mount Rushmore National Memorial or Jewel Cave National Monument, there are several in Custer State Park and another in Wind Cave National Park, plus those in the Black Hills National Forest and privately operated campgrounds. Many commercial campgrounds offer free shuttle services, nightly entertainment, pools, convenience stores, and horseback riding. Reservations are recommended. Choice spots are often filled by midmorning, so arriving at popular campgrounds early in the day is advised. For more information on camping opportunities, contact South Dakota Tourism. For information on National Forest Service campgrounds, contact the Forest Supervisor, Black Hills National Forest, 1019 N. 5th St., Custer, SD 57730 (tel. 605/673-9200; www.fs.fed.us/r2/blackhills), or contact Forest Recreation Management, Inc., 12620 Hwy. 244, Hill City, SD 57745 (tel. 605/574-2525). Inside Wind Cave National Park In the pine forests 1/2 mile north of the park visitor center, Elk Mountain Campground has shady sites suitable for tents and recreational vehicles. The campground fee is $12 per night per site mid-May through mid-September and $6 per night per site the remainder of its season, when water is turned off. Park rangers give campfire programs at the amphitheater in the summer. Backcountry camping is also permitted (contact the park office for details), and backcountry campers are encouraged to practice low-impact camping and hiking techniques. Inside Custer State Park Campgrounds here require park entrance fees as well as camping fees. Each campsite has a gravel or paved camping pad, drinking water and showers, fire grates, and a picnic table, and all campgrounds but Center Lake have flush toilets. About 270 campsites and 50 new camper cabins throughout the park may be reserved beginning in January, while other sites are available on a first-come, first-served basis. Campsites range from modern to primitive. There is electricity at campgrounds throughout the park. For information and reservations, contact Custer State Park, 13329 W.
