Introduction to The Dordogne and PerigordLovers of foie gras and truffles, not to mention nature lovers, have always sought out the Dordogne and Périgord regions of France. Our first stop, Périgueux, was the capital of the old province of Périgord. After following the trail of the Cro-Magnon people to prehistoric caves, we visit Cahors, the ancient capital of Quercy, then Montauban, where the painter Ingres was born. But the towns aren't the stars: The fertile countryside holds the fascination. In some villages the Middle Ages seem to live on. It's said that no discoveries are left to be made in France, but you can disprove that by taking time to visit a region too often neglected by tourists.
