The Hunt Country's back roads and its portion of the 45-mile Washington & Old Dominion Railroad (W&OD) Trail bring bicyclists from all over the mid-Atlantic. The W&OD follows an old railroad bed through the heart of the area, crossing South King Street in Leesburg. I've done part it, and believe me, it's both beautiful and an up-and-down route which can burn your thighs. You can rent wheels in downtown Leesburg from Plum Grove Cyclery, 26 W. Market St. (tel. 703/777-2252; www.plumgrovecyclery.com), and from Bicycle Outfitters, 19 Catoctin Circle NE, in the Leesburg Plaza Shopping Center (tel. 703/777-2148; www.bikeoutfitters.com). Both are 2 blocks north of the W&OD and charge about $25 a day.
Golfers can tee off at the Robert Trent Jones, Jr., and Greg Norman-designed links at Lansdowne Resort. Gary Player designed the course at Raspberry Falls Golf & Hunt Club, 3 miles north of Leesburg on U.S. 15 (tel. 703/779-2555 or 703/589-1042; www.raspberryfalls.com). Less expensive are Goose Creek Golf Club, 43001 Golf Club Rd. (tel. 703/729-2500; www.goosecreekgolf.com), and the municipal Brambleton Regional Park Golf Course, 42180 Ryan Rd. in nearby Ashburn (tel. 703/327-3403; www.nvrpa.org/brambleton.html).
