Willoughvale Inn Review
An elegant inn on a low rise at the north end of Lake Willoughby, the WilloughVale possesses stunning views across the water to the twin mountains bracketing the southern end of this scenic lake. It's an ideal location for a quiet retreat with some books and a bicycle; Robert Frost stayed here in 1909 and wrote a poem about it ("A Servant to Servants"). The 10 rooms in the main lodge are tastefully appointed, with much of their furniture crafted in Vermont; some have private sections of porch and have been thoroughly updated with Jacuzzis, big-screen satellite televisions, gas fireplaces, and similar touches. The cottages -- four are located right on the lake (these have kitchenettes), while four others nearby have lake views -- give more of a rustic, Adirondack-lodge feeling. All of these cottages have wall-unit air conditioning and televisions, and some have fireplaces or Jacuzzis, but they all still feel like country retreats with their exposed woodwork and so forth. The inn's restaurant, open Wednesday through Sunday, serves well-prepared meals and offers a superb view of the lake. There's also a small tavern on site. Frommer's ranks every hotel, restaurant, attraction, shop, and nightlife establishment it reviews for quality, value, service, amenities, and special features using a star-rating scale, an expression of the strong compare-and-contrast opinions that are a brand hallmark.
Other ratings provide stars based primarily on price and amenities; the Frommer's star rating is meant to quantify the kind of intangible, experiential elements that help travelers make informed decisions.
The "baseline" recommendation is zero stars--every hotel, restaurant, attraction, shop, and nightlife establishment that Frommer's chooses to review is recommended; otherwise, we simply wouldn't include it.
