Frommer's Review

Two of the best-recommended dining spots in Martinique lie on the Atlantic coastline. If you arrive for lunch, you'll be steered toward the less expensive, and less formal, of the two restaurants, Le Campêche, an oceanfronting outdoor bistro where good-looking people in teeny bathing suits are not at all out of the ordinary. Menu items focus on tried-and-true Creole specialties, as well as salads, buffets, pastas, and well-prepared versions of grilled fish and meats. Dinners are more elaborate and more formal, served within Le Bélem, a romantic eatery noted for its wine list and its "gastronomic" interpretation of all things French and Antillean. Begin with a tarte tatin of foie gras with caramelized yellow bananas, shallots, and a confit of limes; or perhaps ravioli stuffed with herb-seasoned rabbit. You might also enjoy a succulent version of magret of duckling with green papaya and christophene. Main courses include a filet of red snapper served with a fondue of leeks and truffled fava beans. Another artful dish is spiny lobster prepared three different ways: roasted with vanilla-flavored butter; as lobster ravioli; and served cold, in gelatin, with caviar.

About Our System

Frommer's ranks every hotel, restaurant, attraction, shop, and nightlife establishment it reviews for quality, value, service, amenities, and special features using a star-rating scale, an expression of the strong compare-and-contrast opinions that are a brand hallmark.

Other ratings provide stars based primarily on price and amenities; the Frommer's star rating is meant to quantify the kind of intangible, experiential elements that help travelers make informed decisions.

The "baseline" recommendation is zero stars--every hotel, restaurant, attraction, shop, and nightlife establishment that Frommer's chooses to review is recommended; otherwise, we simply wouldn't include it.
