Frommer's Review
One of the most venerable and historic hotels on Martinique lies within the massive walls of a manor house that once administered many acres of surrounding sugar-cane fields. It was originally built between 1720 and 1800 by a prominent French family, and almost resembles a medieval church. A fire in 1990 completely gutted the building's interior and led to 4 years of restoration. Today, there are three bedrooms on the upper floors of the original house, and another eight within a modern, less inspired one-story annex. Rooms within the annex, although not as dignified, have antique West Indian beds and direct views over the garden. Most units are roomy with double or twin beds, plus a compact tiled bathroom with a combination tub/shower. A truly superb beach, Plage des Salines, is a 5-minute drive to the south, and a slightly less appealing beach, Plage de Ste-Anne, is within a 15-minute walk.
Meals here are conservative, traditional, tried-and-true Creole cuisine, with dishes like codfish fritters, boudin Créole (blood sausage), grilled fish in Creole sauce, curries, and fresh lobster.
