Frommer's Review
Set on a tranquil cove at the southernmost tip of Martinique, Club Med reopened in December of 2005 after a long closing for a major and much-needed restoration. The resort is designed as a series of scattered outbuildings evocative of a Creole village. It is set on a 22-hectare (55-acre) former pirate's hideaway at Buccaneer's Creek, amid a forest of coconut palms.
Originally opened in 1969, the property fronts a beach of white sand with views of Diamond Rock off shore. After spending $60 million, the resort was vastly upgraded and expanded, including the addition of a modern spa with five treatment rooms. Other features include an "infinity edge" pool and a beach palapa for yoga and fitness classes.
Bedrooms are midsize and furnished tastefully and comfortably but far from lavishly. The hotel staff provides an activity-filled agenda for its guests and a respectable cuisine of Antillean and French dishes. Its dance club stays open until the wee hours. Because of the influx of families in summer, prices are slightly higher then.
Regarding pricing at this resort: Club Med tells us that getting North American clients to Martinique because of the lack of nonstop flights from North America is extremely tricky. Therefore, they price all winter U.S. sales at this place to include chartered roundtrip flights from Atlanta, with supplements charged for flights winging in from other parts of the country to hook up with the Atlanta-based flights. In the off season, the equivalent per person rate does not include airfare. What complicates matters is that in the off season, no flights from Atlanta are offered at all. Many flights can be arranged from cities such as New York, for an add-on fee.
