Lao Dingri (Old Tingri)
Be forewarned: Most of the guesthouses in Old Tingri are very basic, so keep your expectations low on the cleanliness, plumbing, and electricity fronts. On the very eastern edge of town, the Xuebao Fandian (Everest Snow Leopard Hotel; tel. 0892/826-2711) offers the best accommodations in town, but it's still nothing special and prices are steep (¥ 280 standard room; ¥180 common room). Regular rooms have worn carpets and there's only electricity and hot water in the evenings. Of the other options in town, the Tingri Snowland Hotel (tel. 0892/8926-017) on the very western edge is the most popular with guides and has very simple, but clean and attractive rooms (¥30 per person) set around a dusty parking lot. The restaurant here is also decent. In the town center the Lhasa Hotel (Lhasa Fandian; tel. 0892/826-2703) has similarly small, simple and attractive rooms (¥80) without facilities, and a cozy restaurant which serves a good veg curry. Other eating options include a host of Sichuan places on the south side of the road in the center of town. For snacks and supplies, Friends and Supermarkets on the north side of the road is a well-ordered convenience store -- Lao Dingri is a long way from anywhere though, so don't expect things to be cheap.
