Weekend nights, the most happening place in town is Meinaxia (Xiaqiong Zhong Lu 37), a Tibetan nangma, or nightclub. Entering via a fire escape on the side of the building felt like going to a club on New York's Lower East Side. Inside, young men in black sleeveless T-shirts take over the dance floor, grooving to a Chinese version of Kylie Minogue only to be edged out by couples (straight and gay) slow dancing to sappy love songs. For me, the highlight of the night was watching the performance of dancers in slinky off-the-shoulder dresses made of colorful wool shimmying to traditional Tibetan music.
