The good news: Some of the greatest attractions in this region are within a 2-hour drive of Toronto, making them easily accessible. The bad news: If you're trying to shoehorn all of the sights into a short stay . . . you've got some serious decisions to make. This chapter describes three of the best-known destinations -- the theater town of Stratford, the wine region of Niagara-on-the-Lake, and the golf/spa/sailing resort retreat of the Muskokas -- as well as the less famous city of Hamilton.
For information about the areas surrounding Toronto, contact Ontario Tourism (tel. 800/ONTARIO; www.ontariotravel.net) or visit its travel information center in the Atrium on Bay (street level) at 20 Dundas St. W. -- it's just across Dundas from the Sears store at the northern edge of the Eaton Centre. It's open daily from 8:30am to 5pm; hours are extended during the summer, often to 8pm. Another good resource is the Southern Ontario Tourism Organization (tel. 800/267-3399; http://soto.on.ca), which has a travel-planning booklet, an e-mail newsletter, and an informative website.
