Toronto presents a wealth of attractions. If your pleasure is simply getting to know the city, you're off to the races: There are plenty of things to do, see, and taste in the downtown core that together offer an easy 101 introduction to Toronto. The major museums, art galleries, and sports venues are here; plus, given the residential nature of the heart of the city, these top attractions are located in neighborhoods also worth exploring.

There are day trips to consider, too: True wilderness, sublime beaches, a giant theme park and equally impressive zoo, and pretty regions of wine country that are also culinary destinations in their own right are all a drive, or train ride, away.

Keep in mind that new in 2012 are added lakeside attractions such as Sugar Beach; an eco-facelift for the shopping stretch of Mink Mile; a new sake brewery in, where else, the Distillery District; and more. For history buffs, the 200th anniversary of the War of 1812 is the inspiration behind a series of events at Old Fort York, as well as other significant sites, such as the battlefield at Fort Erie and the town of Queenston.

Some attractions can easily take up an entire day, such as the Ontario Science Centre, Harbourfront, the Toronto Islands, and Canada's Wonderland. For less ambitious outings, explore the many parks, the thriving arts scene, or the shopping opportunities. And pack a good pair of walking shoes because the best way to appreciate Toronto is on foot.
