Frommer's Review
This leading government-rated five-star hotel in the West Country dates from 1866, but a major refurbishing has kept it abreast of the times and way ahead of its competition. It sits on 2.2 hectares (5 1/2 acres) of subtropical gardens opening onto rocky cliffs, with views of the Channel. You'll follow the example of some of the characters of Agatha Christie if you check in here. She called it the Esplanade in The Rajah's Emerald, the Castle in Partners in Crime, and the Majestic in Peril at End House. Inside is a world of soaring ceilings, marble columns, and ornate plasterwork -- enough to make a former visitor, Edward VII, feel at home. Rooms are studies in grand living, with beautiful reproduction pieces, striped wallpaper, and upholstered seating. Many have private balconies suspended high above a view that encompasses offshore islands with black rocks and sheer sides. Bathrooms are grandly appointed with deluxe toiletries and tub/shower combos.
Facilities: 2 restaurants; bar; 2 heated pools (indoor, outdoor); 2 tennis courts; 2 squash courts; health club; spa; sauna; steam room; salon; solarium; room service; laundry service; dry cleaning; nonsmoking rooms; rooms for those w/limited mobility.
