Long Bay Beach Resort & Villas ReviewA favorite of travelers since the 1960s, this resort lies on a 2km-long (1 1/4-mile) sandy beach on the north shore, about 10 minutes from West End. It's the only full-service resort on the island, a low-rise complex set in a 21-hectare (52-acre) estate. Complaints about overbuilding and problems with maintenance have marred the once-stellar reputation of this resort, but there is still much to enjoy. Accommodations include hillside rooms and studios, plus two- and three-bedroom villas complete with a kitchen, a living area, and a large deck with a gas grill. The smallest and most basic units have simple furnishings, while the deluxe beachfront rooms and cabanas have either balconies or patios that overlook the ocean. Each unit does have an ocean view. The two restaurants include 1748, built within the ruins of an old sugar mill, and the alfresco Palm Terrace, which serves a variety of local and international dishes in a more elegant and formal setting. The cuisine, especially the fresh fish, is among the finest at any hotel on the island, which is complemented by an extensive wine list. Frommer's ranks every hotel, restaurant, attraction, shop, and nightlife establishment it reviews for quality, value, service, amenities, and special features using a star-rating scale, an expression of the strong compare-and-contrast opinions that are a brand hallmark.
Other ratings provide stars based primarily on price and amenities; the Frommer's star rating is meant to quantify the kind of intangible, experiential elements that help travelers make informed decisions.
The "baseline" recommendation is zero stars--every hotel, restaurant, attraction, shop, and nightlife establishment that Frommer's chooses to review is recommended; otherwise, we simply wouldn't include it.
