Getting There

Aerolíneas Argentinas (tel. 0810/222-86527) is the sole operator at Almirante Zar airport, 5km (3 miles) from the city center. They fly at least twice daily from Buenos Aires, with extra flights on weekends. Aerolíneas also has several weekly flights from El Calafate and Ushuaia. 28 de Julio buses (tel. 2965/472056) arrive every hour from Puerto Madryn at the OmniBus station, located at 100 Urquiza (tel. 2965/420121). The cost is $7 (£4.75) one-way. Buses from Buenos Aires take 20 hours and cost $75 (£51) one-way.

Visitor Information

The tourist office is on the Plaza San Martín, at 387 Mitre (tel. 2965/420139; www.trelew.gov.ar). The English-speaking agents are very helpful and have lots of maps and information about the Península Valdés and the region. The office is open from 8am to 8pm daily.

Getting Around

A taxi or remise from the airport to the city center will cost no more than $5 (£3.40). From Puerto Madryn to Trelew, a taxi or remise will cost no more than $35 (£24). A taxi from Puerto Pirámides is $155 (£105).

Fiorasi Rent-A-Car has offices at the airport and at Urquiza 31 (tel. 2965/435344) in the city center. Hertz has an office only at the airport (tel. 2965/436005). The average cost for a compact car is $70 (£47) per day.
