This is Trieste's archaeological collection, and it includes prehistoric finds, exquisite Greek pieces (including some fine vases and a 4th-century-B.C. silver Rhyton, a chalice shaped as a deer's head, from Taranto), and remnants of the city's Roman past. Most of the Roman architectural fragments, though, are scattered about the Orto Lapidario (Lapidary Garden). A few rooms of the museum house a growing Egyptian collection, including a female mummy.

Another outdoor remnant of Roman Trieste lies near the bottom of the Colle Capitolino. On Via Teatro Romano, you'll find the Teatro Romano (Roman Theater), built in the 2nd century A.D. Only partially unearthed, the ruins can be glimpsed through a fence; let your imagination take you to the days when 6,000 spectators packed in for gladiatorial contests.
