This animated trattoria in the center of town near Trieste's Greek Orthodox church of San Nicolò dei Greci is popular with workers from the surrounding offices. The jota, a soup of beans and cabbage; cevapcici (Trieste's special meatballs, a Croatian tradition); and gnocchi di patate (potato gnocchi filled with cheese), as well as many pastas, are excellent, especially those topped with fresh porcini mushrooms. Main courses concentrate on meat, including bistecche di cavallo (horsemeat steak) or costine di miale (roast pork ribs), though fresh grilled Adriatic fish is often available. While in the evenings the trattoria provides table service, for lunch it functions as a buffet.
