Main Street was once part of the Mountain Route of the Santa Fe Trail, and many of the streets that cross it are paved with locally made redbrick. The Trinidad Historical Society has a nice website, giving the history of its most important buildings. Among the buildings it singles out for special attention are such Victorian beauts as the Trinidad Opera House (1883) and Columbian Hotel (1879), which are across from each other on Main Street, as well as the Trinidad Water Works (1879), on Cedar Street at the Purgatoire River.
