Frommer's Review
Originally built in the 1930s and set about 2km (1 1/4 miles) west of Port-of-Spain's center, Veni Mangé (which means "come and eat") is painted in coral tones and has louvered windows on hinges that ventilate the masses of potted plants. It was established by two of the best-known women in Trinidad, Allyson Hennessy and her sister, Rosemary Hezekiah. Allyson, the Julia Child of Trinidad, hosts a daily TV talk show that's broadcast throughout the island.
Start with the bartender's special, a coral-colored fruit punch that's a rich, luscious mixture of papaya, guava, orange, and passion fruit juices. The authentic callaloo soup, according to Trinidadian legend, can make a man propose marriage. With a menu that changes daily, the main courses might be curried crab, a West Indian hot pot (a variety of meats cooked Creole style), or perhaps a vegetable lentil loaf. The helpings are large, but if you still have room, order the pineapple upside-down cake.
