Reigning today as the grande dame hotel of Tromsø, this well-managed staple from 1965 is the oldest and best established of the town's large-scale hotels, rising 10 stories. The hotel was radically overhauled and expanded in 2008, making it the largest in northern Norway. Rooms come in two distinct styles, Arctic or Chili. Rooms in the Arctic style come with soothing white, orange, and green tones with lots of wood. Those in the Chili style are imbued with hot colors, including red tones, each with modern furnishings. It has a highly competent staff and boasts a larger and more diverse array of food and beverage facilities than any other hotel in town. Its most upscale restaurant (Aurora) and most famous of its bars (Rorbua) are each separately recommended.
