This formerly grand hotel is a shadow of its former self, but fans of faded splendor -- better put, lovers of down-in-the-chops decadence -- might find themselves at home here. The huge hotel has a few hints of its bygone elegance and grand architecture (now totally uncared for) in the lobby, such as cool reliefs -- if you squint hard enough. The rooms, though, are pretty dingy. Floorboards are in bad shape, the fluorescent lighting stinks, and the place feels abandoned. It's a shame, because if it were restored and kept up, it would look like an early-20th-century North African hotel straight out of The English Patient. Comparatively, the Hostal Colonial or any of the hostales in Huanchaco are a much better value. Then again, staying at the Americano might have its own peculiar value for some travelers, inexplicably drawn to places in free-fall decline.
