Frommer's Review
In a theater complex that was the original playground of the founder of Bearsville Records (and manager of Dylan, Joplin, and The Band), this excellent restaurant with a rock-'n'-roll pedigree is a sophisticated but refreshingly casual eatery a couple of miles from Woodstock. The decor is charmingly rustic and warm, with peaked old-wood ceilings overlooking a flowing brook. Although you could opt for something simple like a half-pound burger, this is a place to indulge; meat eaters should try the signature dish, filet mignon with port garlic sauce and Stilton blue cheese, a French classic of sweet and sharp tastes. There is a long list of specials daily, and an extensive regular menu. At the front there's a nice and lively bar with a good mix of locals, weekenders, and visitors. Service is excellent, as are the delectable homemade desserts. The wine list is outstanding, with several interesting and hard-to-find choices, like the Priorats from Spain and several interesting kinds of Shiraz from Australia. Big spenders will enjoy the fantastic collection of rare bordeaux vintages, the "Off List," from which the restaurant donates 10% to the Windows of Hope Foundation, which benefits the families of restaurant workers lost in the 9/11 attacks.
