Planning a Trip

Visitor Information

The Tourist Information office is in the center of town across from the police station, on Kayseri Cad. 37 (tel. 0384/341-4059), and is open daily 8am to 6pm; closed Sunday in winter.

Orientation

The village fans out around the bus station and a brand-new cement-block shopping gallery, which is right in the center of town. From the main square outside the bus station running northeast is Kayseri Caddesi, Ürgüp's main shopping street, with a wide variety of shopping options, from overstocked antiques stores to jewelry boutiques with the finest selection of lapis lazuli, handcrafted silver, and tribal items. The information office, the police station, and the hospital can be reached down this road as well. Forking east below Kayseri Caddesi is a small street of localized travel agencies, many of which double as bike or scooter rental outfits. Ahmet Refik Caddesi heads northwest from the center, snaking around the base of the old village of partially collapsed and deserted rock homes to the left and Temmeni Hill to the right, on its way up the hill toward Göreme and Nevsehir. Buying a souvenir cluster of fairy chimneys is made all too easy along Ahmet Refik Caddesi, but once you've cleared the souvenir shops, rural life takes over. Near the top of the hill is the Turasan winery and the neighborhood of Esbelli, where you will find two hotels mentioned below. To re-enter town by car, turn left onto Istiklal Caddesi, which leads back into the town center.

Getting Around

Ürgüp is easily walkable, but if you're staying in the neighborhood of Esbelli, you may want to know that the hill up from the center of town is quite steep. During the summer months when the Municipality fills the streets with clouds of insect repellent to combat the irritating swarms of bees that hover over your breakfast, it's best to forgo the after-dinner stroll and take a taxi up to your hotel.

Several car-rental agencies offering low daily rates of around 61YTL ($45) per day are located in the center of town, including Avis, Istiklal Caddesi Belediye Pasaji 10 (tel. 0384/341-2177), Europcar, Istiklal Cad. 10 (tel. 0384/341-8855), and Budget, Kayseri Caddesi (tel. 0384/341-6541). You may also save a few dollars by working with one of the neighboring locals. Scooters and beat-up old mountain bikes are also for rent in various shops along the market from around 47YTL and 20YTL ($35 and $15) per day, respectively (hourly and half-day rates also available).
