Close to Urubamba, just off the main road, is this charming and rustic hotel inhabiting parts of a 16th-century Franciscan monastery. Now that it is being sensitively renovated, it stands to become one of the finest properties in the region. It has the potential to become a mini-Hotel Monasterio (of Cusco) in the Urubamba Valley. The beautifully remodeled rooms (nos. 401-404) have outstanding views and remains of original Inca walls, and they greatly surpass the original, far simpler rooms. Services are still somewhat limited compared to other top-end hotels in the region. Climb up to the bell tower above the old chapel for great views of the valley. A nearby sister property is the similar, though somewhat less inviting, Hotel San Agustín Urubamba (tel. 084/201444).
